You can improve your disease on various different types of diets but none can surpass the changes a whole food plant based diet can do for your gut microbiome. Nutrition DOES play a part! ⁠I treat autoimmune disease every single day. The field of rheumatology is based off the immune system gone wrong. My job is to calm the immune system down. What do I recommend to every single patient I encounter? A diet that is filled with plants.

How does food treat the immune system? Through the GUT. 60% of your immune system is at the gut. So if I want to stop your inflammation with tools other than medications then I will have to turn to food as a foundation!

Can you guess what one of the links between vitamin D and lupus is? ⁠🤔 Fatigue! ⁠

👉 Fatigue was found to be considered the the most debilitating symptom in 53% of lupus patients in one study. ⁠
⁠
Can low vitamin D be linked to fatigue in lupus? 🤔⁠
⁠
👉 Some studies have suggested that it certainly can while other studies show that there is no correlation. Vitamin D plays a role in the immune system and can affect the pathophysiology behind lupus as well. Fatigue is one of the biggest symptoms I hear about from my lupus patients. Fatigue can wear you down and make you feel down and depressed as well. Productivity and having a sense of mission is what helps give us meaning to our lives. But once you have fatigue, it can really hold you back from living life. ⁠

So what if you are deficient in vitamin D? 🤔⁠
⁠
👉 It is important to take supplementation and have your physician check your vitamin D. I have noticed some of my patients have improved fatigue and/or joint pains when their vitamin D normalizes. Do not underestimate the power of vitamin D. Vitamin D is underrated and can play a big role. ⁠

Nothing beats a solid foundation of a healthy lifestyle! Try it and let me know what you think! Or, have you noticed a difference in your overall health since going more plant-based? Strive as best you can to eat a diet filled with fruits and vegetables and see how you feel. Add in exercise or daily movement. Minimize your toxins. Remove unhealthy relationships and build a solid support system.

You can take all the supplements, medications and alternative therapies in the world but the most powerful thing you can do for yourself is to create a solid foundation. Diseases and illnesses can still happen but at least you set your body for a more powerful fight. When I preach a plant predominant diet I am not only preaching immune health. I am also talking about heart health, brain health, gut health, etc. There is no magic trick to a solid foundation. Even if you decide to eat other foods that you enjoy (which we all do and is totally ok!) at least get your phytonutrients and fiber daily.

Swollen joints at any age should not be ignored and can be from rheumatoid arthritis. Swollen and painful joints from rheumatoid arthritis over time can cause erosions on the bones and eventually cause irreversible deformities. If whatever you are doing doesn't work and you are still getting flares then it is time to pivot. Pivoting can either be adding medications, switching medications, or adding holistic ways on top of using medications.

There's more than one way to fight chronic illnesses. Sometimes you will need a combination of therapies. Integrative medicine can be one of the answers combining both alternative and traditional medicine which is what I do for my patients. There is no one size fits all when it comes to diet. Each person has a unique microbiome on their body and in their gut. You should not feel guilty for not being able to tolerate a certain diet. Eating healthy means incorporating plants into your diet including fruits and vegetables. Eating healthy does not mean going only 100% plant based or completely vegan. Healthy has different definitions for different people. People should not feel guilty for eating a certain way. I have seen patients having eating disorders because they try to eat a certain diet and their body just cannot achieve it because their gut microbiome cannot tolerate those foods. I would rather have someone have an expansion of their diet than have eating disorders and feel guilty. For me, having a healthy relationship with food and eating healthy means incorporating plants into the diet it being at least half the diet.

Multiple studies have shown that people on the diets that incorporate plants such as the mediterranean diet are healthy as well. The mediterranean diet is filled with plants and whole grains and less meat.
