$Proton pump inhibitors are used frequently for acid reflux, but they can have side effects that may not be seen for a while. Because of the acid blockade, certain nutrients have trouble being absorbed by the body. PPIs have also been associated with increased hip fracture risk. One possible etiology is decreased calcium absorption, which can lead to lower bone density. Personal stressors in life can make your chronic illness worse. Toxic relationships and abusive relationships can induce disease and cause you to take a couple of steps back from the progress that you have made. This is a new year, and it's time to evaluate your surroundings and figure out how to make yourself happy so that your health can be priority.

New study on RA shows that passive smoking is associated with RA also. We already known active smoking increases of risk of RA. Now we have studies showing that mothers who smoke while pregnant will increase risk of RA in the baby that is being carried. Also adults who smoke with children at home increased the risk of RA in those children.

Bottom line is to stop smoking period. This not only affects the person smoking but the people around them as well.

Had a bit too much fun in cancun and had a flare first day and on the night of the wedding I went to. One of the more memorable flares for past couple years but back to no pain now. Popped some turmeric supplements and did some fasting to get over it.

Your day to day habits are what is most important. I tell my patients the 80/20 principle. 80-90% of the time you do the best you can but that 10-20% of the time it's okay to let go and not be so uptight. Sometimes we have to live life and enjoy the moment.

So how do look in Indian clothes??

Environmental toxins are not talked about enough. Environmental medicine is a field of integrative medicine that isn't talked about enough. BPA, Glyphosate, PFAS, PCBs, Dioxins, VOCs...these are just some of the toxins in our environment that are slowly damaging our health. These chemicals affect both our hormonal system and immune system. They are called endocrine disruptors for a reason. Glyphosate can contribute to increased intestinal permeability and may be one of the keys to contributing to autoimmunity. ⠀

I wish we learned more about these toxins during medical school and residency training but unfortunately, it is not mentioned much. This is why I have to dig and dig to find this knowledge and luckily integrative medicine does discuss these topics and their impact on our health. Sometimes it is hard to avoid these toxins but at least we can find ways to minimize exposure. Remember my RA and pesticide study many months ago??? Yes, we are beginning to see some association 🙂⠀

Giant cell arteritis, also known as temporal arteritis, is an autoimmune inflammatory disease that happens to patients over the age of 50. Usually, this disease can present with acute blindness or visual changes, jaw pain with eating, and headaches. When this happens it is an emergency and usually, high dose steroids are used to control the inflammation and prevent further damage to the eye. Worst case scenario is complete blindness due to inflammation of the vessels. Giant cell arteritis is a type of vasculitis, which means inflammation of the vessels. This is a disease that should be controlled with allopathic medicine in the immediate stage as it is an emergency.⠀
