Can CAR T-Cell Therapy Cure Autoimmune Disease?
That’s an important question, but we need to be careful about the language we use. CAR T-cell therapy is not currently an established cure for autoimmune disease.
At the same time, early research has produced some very interesting results, including deep and sustained remission in some patients with severe autoimmune conditions. There is still a lot we need to understand about who may benefit, how durable these responses are, and the short- and long-term risks of treatment.
As an integrative rheumatologist, I’m particularly interested in therapies that help us better understand the underlying biology of autoimmune disease—not just how we can manage symptoms. CAR T-cell therapy is still an emerging area, but it could teach us a lot about how autoimmune diseases develop and how we may be able to treat them differently in the future.
